AS FAR supporters push back against league sanctions, call measures excessive

AS FAR supporters have rejected sweeping league sanctions after the Rabat violence, denouncing the measures as excessive as the club faces closed door matches and a season long travel ban for fans.

The club’s supporters have publicly pushed back against the latest disciplinary sanctions imposed by Morocco’s National Professional Football League, calling the measures excessive and unfair.

The measures also extended to the stands, with AS FAR supporters barred from traveling for the rest of the season.

The sanctions included five matches behind closed doors, a ban on hosting league games at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium until the end of the season, a fine of 200,000 dirhams, and an obligation for AS FAR to pay half of the repair costs for the damage recorded at the stadium after expert assessment.

In a joint statement, the AS FAR fan associations “Joumhour Al Assima” and “Zaïm” said the penalties were severe, disproportionate and lacking in both justice and legitimacy.

In their statement, the fans said such a move amounts to a “forced displacement” from Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium, a venue they described as inseparable from the club’s identity and history.

The two associations also rejected the idea that AS FAR should carry sole responsibility for the events surrounding the match, arguing that organizational shortcomings affected the management of the game and called for a full investigation to establish accountability instead of what they described as a “selective disciplinary approach”.

The supporters further denounced what they called a hostile media campaign before and after the match, accusing some outlets of influencing public opinion and shaping the climate around the sanctions as well as the image of the club’s fans.
