A Moroccan detainee has died inside an Iraqi prison, according to a statement from the National Coordination of Families of Moroccans Stuck and Detained in Syria and Iraq.

The statement said the man’s family was informed through the International Committee of the Red Cross office in Morocco.

The group said Ahmed Al Haddoushi, from Nador, died March 17, 2026. A prison doctor cited a heart attack as the cause of death, the statement said.

The announcement has sparked concern among families of Moroccan detainees held abroad, especially in Iraq and Syria, where many cases remain unclear and contact with prisoners is limited

Al Haddoushi was among a number of Moroccan nationals recently transferred from detention facilities run by Kurdish-led forces in Syria to Iraqi prisons, according to the group.

Details surrounding those transfers have not been fully disclosed, and families say they were given little to no information about the legal status or conditions of their relatives.

Human rights advocates have long raised concerns about the treatment of foreign detainees in the region. Reports from international organizations have pointed to overcrowding, lack of medical care and limited legal access in some facilities holding suspected militants or individuals linked to conflict zones.

Families say they struggle to get updates, with communication often cut off for long periods. In many cases, detainees have not gone through formal trials, raising questions about due process and basic legal protections.

The group called for an independent international investigation into Al-Haddoushi’s death, urging authorities to clarify the circumstances and ensure accountability if wrongdoing is found.

It also appealed to Moroccan and international officials to take urgent action to protect other detainees, improve their conditions and allow families regular access to information.

Dozens of Moroccan detainees are believed to still be held in prisons across Iraq and Syria.
