The Moroccan Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott (MACBI), alongside various social media users, has called on the public to boycott the upcoming concerts of French singer Kendji Girac, scheduled to take place in Rabat and Casablanca later this April.
In a public letter directed to the production company “Kenza Cheddadi” and the organizers of “The Unforgettable Show,” MACBI described the artist’s invitation as a blatant violation. The campaign attributes this stance to Girac’s perceived support for Israel, citing his past collaborations with Israeli artists, performances in Tel Aviv, and previous media statements that the campaign views as promotional.
Echoing these sentiments, several social media users criticized the decision to host the singer, arguing that it ignores the severe historical and political context of the Palestinian cause amid the ongoing situation in the Palestinian territories.
The campaign has urged the event organizers to withdraw the invitation, warning that it will mobilize a formal boycott and stage peaceful protests if the demands are ignored. MACBI emphasized that while art is a universal language, it cannot be divorced from political realities, stressing that cultural platforms bear an ethical responsibility regarding the artists they choose to host.
To support its position, MACBI referenced the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion from July 19, 2024, and the United Nations General Assembly resolution from September 18, 2024, arguing that such boycotts represent an international legal obligation rather than just a moral stance.
