Kenya said on Thursday it supports Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty and intends to work with like minded states to help advance it, marking a stronger public alignment with Rabat’s position after bilateral talks in Nairobi.
The stance was set out after the first session of the Morocco Kenya Joint Cooperation Commission, co chaired by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi.
In the joint communiqué, Kenya welcomed what it called the growing international consensus behind Morocco’s autonomy proposal and described the plan as the “only credible and realistic solution” to the Sahara dispute. It also said it viewed the initiative as a sustainable approach and would cooperate with states sharing the same position to support its implementation.
Kenya also welcomed U.N. Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on Oct. 31, 2025, which renewed MINURSO’s mandate and backed negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal with a view to a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution. Nairobi said it supports the efforts of the U.N. secretary general and his personal envoy to advance talks on that basis.
