Morocco’s calm spell is about to break with storms and cooler air on the way

Morocco is expected to shift from relatively stable spring weather to a more unsettled pattern over the coming days, with showers, possible thunderstorms, stronger winds and lower temperatures forecast from early next week, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology.

Hussein Youabed, head of communication at the weather agency, said the country is currently under the influence of the Azores high over northern regions, a system that is helping maintain broadly stable conditions and higher temperatures, particularly across inland and southern areas, while unstable tropical air masses remain present in the far south.

Youabed said updated weather data point to the approach of an upper level low, known as a cold drop, from Tuesday, a development that is likely to weaken the high pressure system and usher in a new phase of atmospheric instability.

The change is expected to produce convective cloud formation, with local rainfall that could at times turn thundery, especially over mountainous areas and across northern and inland regions.

The shift is also likely to bring a gradual drop in temperatures and more active winds in several parts of the country.

From Friday, partly cloudy conditions are expected across much of Morocco, with relatively cold nighttime weather over high ground and a marked rise in temperatures in the southeast, Souss and the southern provinces. Low clouds with local fog are also expected near the coast, while strong winds may trigger blowing dust in some areas.

Saturday is forecast to bring similar conditions, with a further fall in minimum temperatures, especially in mountain areas, as well as light local rainfall and relatively strong gusts, notably in Tangier and the southern provinces.

By Sunday, weak rainfall, sometimes thundery, is expected in the northern parts of the southern provinces, Souss and the Anti Atlas, before instability deepens on Monday and Tuesday across the High Atlas, central regions, the north and the east.
