Redouane Aarraj said Morocco will begin implementing a recovery program for areas affected by recent floods starting next week, including the distribution of subsidized seeds and fertilizers to farmers.
Aarraj, secretary-general of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, made the remarks on the sidelines of a national conference on Morocco’s grain sector organized by COMADER.
He said flooding in February affected between 75,000 and 80,000 hectares in the Gharb and Loukkos regions, noting that the figure remains limited compared with the 3.9 million hectares planted with cereals nationwide this season.
The government will proceed with previously announced measures to mitigate the impact on the agricultural sector, focusing on restoring production through the promotion of spring crops, Aarraj said.
Distribution of subsidized seeds and fertilizers to affected farmers is expected to begin next week following the completion of damage assessments, he added, describing the timing as aligned with the spring planting season.
The floods caused significant damage in several agricultural areas, particularly in the Gharb plain. In response, the Moroccan government, following instructions from King Mohammed VI, announced a set of measures to support the sector.
Agriculture Minister Ahmed El Bouari previously said the recovery plan is based on three pillars: supporting livestock farmers and preserving herds through feed distribution and veterinary monitoring; relaunching agricultural production via spring crops supported by subsidized inputs; and rehabilitating hydro-agricultural infrastructure, including irrigation systems and rural roads, to restore access to farms and affected areas.
