Spanish Civil Guard officers in Ceuta recovered the body of a Moroccan migrant on Saturday after he drowned while trying to swim to the Spanish enclave, local newspaper El Faro de Ceuta reported.
The young man, who was wearing a wetsuit and fins, was unable to withstand rough sea conditions linked to Storm Teresa and drowned during the attempted crossing, the report said.
The incident came only days after a similar case in which another Moroccan migrant died shortly after reaching a rocky area known as Benzu, near the Juan XXIII district.
The latest death brings the number of migrant fatalities on this route to 12, according to the newspaper.
El Faro de Ceuta said several migrants had attempted in recent days to reach the enclave by swimming along dangerous routes despite heavy seas caused by bad weather.
The conditions have prompted maritime rescue teams to intensify operations in waters off the enclave, the newspaper added.
