Ibn Tofail university defends expulsion of 21 students over campus unrest

Ibn Tofail University is defending its decision to expel 21 students after a series of protests disrupted campus life during the 2025–2026 academic year.

The university said the expulsions followed serious misconduct, including verbal and physical attacks on faculty, threats to classmates, and forcing others out of classrooms.

The university described the incidents as unprecedented. Students reportedly blocked registration for undergraduate and master’s programs by occupying administrative offices and laboratories, while also harassing professors to stop lessons.

Faculty and administrative staff filed dozens of complaints detailing threats, intimidation, and acts of violence. Some even went to local authorities seeking protection.

“These actions were extremely serious and affected more than 90,000 students’ right to learn,” the university said in a statement.

“Despite repeated dialogue and responses to legitimate demands, the students escalated their actions, tearing exam papers and threatening staff,” the statement added.

The disciplinary councils, which met on March 6 and 17, reviewed complaints and evidence submitted by faculty and administrators.

A total of 23 students were summoned, though most refused to attend, claiming the councils were illegitimate.

After careful consideration, the councils issued warnings to two students and permanent expulsion to 21 others.

The university said the students’ actions violated multiple rules, including obstructing classes and exams, endangering people and property, and inciting behavior that disrupted the academic environment.

The university said that all procedures followed legal regulations and internal university rules.

Ibn Tofail University said that it acted to protect the safety and learning of its community. “Our goal has always been to maintain a safe and fair educational environment,” the statement said.

“The disciplinary measures were necessary to uphold the integrity of the university and ensure that all students can continue their studies without fear or disruption,” the statement added.
