A young Moroccan man died while trying to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta by swimming, local media reports said, taking the number of migrant deaths on the route since the start of 2026 to 11.
According to the reports, the incident took place near the rocky El Pineo area, where several young Moroccans attempted to bypass the maritime barrier by swimming around it wearing diving suits in the hope of reaching Ceuta.
Rescue teams were able to save one of the swimmers, while another disappeared near a rocky stretch of coastline, where poor visibility and difficult terrain complicated the search operation, the reports said.
A Spanish Civil Guard dive unit later located and recovered the body, which was transferred to the naval base at Ceuta’s fishing port, according to the same accounts.
The latest death underscores the risks of irregular migration along the Ceuta sea route, where repeated attempts by young migrants continue to end in fatal accidents.
