Palestinian broadcaster Jamal Rayyan, one of Al Jazeera’s most prominent news anchors and the first presenter to appear on the channel when it launched in 1996, died on Sunday at the age of 73, Al Jazeera said.

Tributes quickly followed across Arab media, including from Algerian presenter Khadija Benganna, a longtime colleague at the network.

Born in 1953 in Tulkarm in the occupied West Bank, Rayyan began his media career with Jordan Radio and Television in 1974 and later worked for the BBC Arabic service, South Korean broadcasting and Abu Dhabi TV before joining Al Jazeera at its launch.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, he became one of the best known faces in Arab television news.
