The head of the U.N. shipping agency said about 20,000 seafarers and 15,000 passengers were stranded in the Persian Gulf as the Strait of Hormuz disruption in recent days halted commercial traffic.
Arsenio Dominguez, secretary general of the International Maritime Organization, told AFP the IMO was ready to work with stakeholders to help ensure the safety and well being of crews.
Since the first U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on Saturday, the IMO has recorded seven incidents involving ships in and around Hormuz, with two deaths and six injured, AFP reported.
Kpler data cited by AFP said tanker traffic through Hormuz was down about 90 percent on Wednesday as major shipowners paused Gulf calls and rerouted cargoes.
