Search operations continued Thursday for a 2-year-old girl who disappeared the previous evening in a neighborhood of the northern city of Chefchaouen, in circumstances that remain unclear.

The child, identified as Soundouss, went missing Wednesday afternoon in the Kranseif neighborhood, prompting her family to launch an immediate search with the help of neighbors who combed nearby streets and surrounding areas.

Civil protection teams were dispatched to the scene and carried out sweeping operations around the neighborhood and along the banks of a nearby river. Volunteers from the Moroccan Red Crescent also joined the effort, conducting repeated search rounds, but the child had not been found as of Thursday.

Units from the Royal Gendarmerie deployed trained dogs in an attempt to track any possible leads, authorities said, though no confirmed information has emerged about the circumstances of her disappearance.

The incident triggered heightened alert in the area, with the provincial governor of Chefchaouen visiting the neighborhood to oversee and follow up on search efforts.

Speculation among residents has ranged from the possibility that the child may have fallen into the nearby river to other potential scenarios, though officials have not confirmed any hypothesis.

Family members remain in a state of distress as investigations continue, with no decisive clues yet identified. Authorities said search operations would continue as they work to determine the child’s whereabouts.
