Germany deported 785 Moroccan nationals in 2025 as part of a broader increase in removals of people without legal residency, according to official government data released this week.

German authorities carried out 22,787 deportations overall last year, continuing an upward trend following a pandemic-era slowdown.

Germany recorded roughly 20,000 deportations in 2024 and about 16,400 in 2023, after removals had dropped in 2020 and 2021 due to travel restrictions and logistical constraints linked to COVID-19.

Morocco ranked 11th among destination countries for deportations in 2025.

The figures also showed that 483 Moroccan nationals were subjected to physical restraint measures during removal procedures. This number is the highest recorded for any nationality.

By comparison, 426 Algerian nationals were subjected to similar measures.

Most deportations were carried out on scheduled commercial flights rather than on chartered aircraft.

Authorities also reported unsuccessful deportation attempts. Among those who were not ultimately returned after being handed over to federal police were 57 Moroccan nationals.

Germany conducted 5377 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin Regulation, which requires asylum seekers to have their claims processed in the first EU country they entered.

Of those transfers, 181 involved Moroccan nationals and 384 involved Algerians.

Afghans, Syrians and Turkish nationals were among the most affected groups under the Dublin system.

Turkey, Georgia, Spain and France were among the leading destinations for removals overall.

While the majority of deportations were carried out by air, smaller numbers took place by land and sea.

By the end of 2025, 232,067 people in Germany were subject to deportation orders, including 190,974 who held “tolerated” status, meaning their removal was temporarily suspended.

16,576 people departed voluntarily under the government’s REAG/GARP assisted return program.
