Morocco’s gas imports rose by 6.9% in 2025, reaching approximately 10.375 terawatt-hours (TWh), up from 9.703 TWh in 2024, according to a new report by the Attaqa platform.

Imports began the year at 672 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in January and increased steadily to 916 GWh by December, with supplies peaking at 992 GWh in both July and August.

Citing Spain’s strategic reserves agency CORES, the report said Morocco was the main destination for Spain’s natural gas exports in December 2025, receiving 916 GWh—equivalent to 38% of the 2.411 TWh exported that month.

Morocco was also a major destination for Spain’s gas exports throughout 2025, accounting for 24.9% of the total 41.735 TWh exported. France remained Spain’s top gas export destination, receiving 34.5% of the total.

According to Attaqa, Morocco imports liquefied natural gas (LNG) from several international suppliers, including Russia and the United States, while the remaining volumes are supplied by Shell under a long-term agreement signed in 2023.

The 12-year deal with Shell, concluded in July 2023, secures the supply of 500 million cubic meters of LNG annually, which the platform said supports Morocco’s efforts to stabilize its energy sector and meet domestic fuel demand.

The report also noted that Morocco has been listed as a Russian gas importer via pipelines for the past 21 months, despite having no direct pipeline connection to Russia.

It said this classification likely refers to Russian LNG that is regasified in Spain before being transported to Morocco through the Maghreb–Europe pipeline, which previously carried Algerian gas to Europe.
