Moroccan police and customs officials at the Beni Ansar port in Nador foiled an international gold-smuggling attempt Saturday, seizing 13.506 kilograms of gold bars hidden in a vehicle with foreign license plates.

The car arrived on a ferry from a European port, authorities said. Officers conducting routine border inspections discovered the gold concealed inside the vehicle and arrested the driver, a Moroccan national.

The suspect is under judicial investigation supervised by the competent public prosecutor to determine the circumstances of the case and uncover potential national and international links to the criminal operation.
