Northern Morocco is expected to face a new spell of unsettled weather as an Atlantic low pressure system referred to as “Marta” forms over the ocean this weekend, bringing rain, occasional thunderstorms, mountain snowfall, strong winds and rough seas, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology.
Hussein Youabed, the agency’s communications official, told Hespress that the system should not be described as a direct storm hitting Morocco, but rather as an extension of an active Atlantic depression whose effects will stretch toward southern France, Spain and Portugal and reach northern Morocco indirectly.
Youabed said the impact in Morocco is expected to concentrate on northern areas, particularly Loukkos, Tangier and the Rif, along with the Atlas highlands.
He said the country should see rainfall and showers that may be thundery at times in Tangier, Loukkos, the Rif, Saiss and Gharb. The system is also expected to bring rain to the Middle Atlas, the High Atlas and adjacent western plains, with rainfall continuing along Atlantic plains north of Essaouira.
On snowfall, Youabed said snow is expected in the Atlas from 1,600 metres and in the Rif from 1,400 metres, while winds will remain strong to very strong across northern and central regions and in the southern provinces, alongside continued sea disturbance during the period.
He said conditions should remain favourable for rainfall in the northwest and the Rif through Monday, before shifting toward gradual and relative stabilisation as passing clouds move in from Tuesday, with the Azores high returning and more settled weather expected from Wednesday.
The meteorology directorate urged residents to take precautions, particularly in areas exposed to water accumulation, avoid attempting to cross wadis and steep slopes, move to safe locations as a preventive step, follow official guidance, avoid beaches this weekend, and monitor official alerts regularly.
