Morocco’s National Institute of Geophysics said a 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck Al Hoceima province late Friday into Saturday and was strongly felt overnight.
Nasser Jabour, the institute’s director told Hespress the tremor was recorded in the commune of Arbaa Taourirt in Al Hoceima province.
Jabour said a second earthquake was recorded early Saturday at around 6 a.m. in Azilal province, but it was weaker at 2.8 magnitude and was not widely felt by residents.
He said monitoring also detected dozens of additional aftershocks of low intensity, measuring under 2.0 magnitude, which residents did not feel.
Jabour described the Al Hoceima quake as within the normal range for the area, which he said has experienced sustained seismic activity for years, adding that what stood out this time was the relatively higher magnitude compared with the weaker tremors usually recorded.
“Felt tremors from time to time in these areas are ordinary and expected given the region’s geological history,” Jabour said, adding that the institute would continue close monitoring for any change in current seismic activity.
