Brazilian customs authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle 240 kilograms (529 pounds) of cocaine concealed in a shipment of soybean oil destined for Morocco’s Tangier Med port and onward to Portugal, Brazilian media reported.

The drugs were hidden inside a shipment weighing more than 20 tons of soybean oil at the port of Santos, on the western coast of Sao Paulo state.

Customs officers discovered the cocaine during routine inspections using sniffer dogs and scanning equipment, according to the reports.

Following confirmation of the seizure, customs officials at Santos port alerted Brazil’s federal police, who opened an investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office to determine how the shipment was organized and identify those responsible.
