Morocco’s Royal Moroccan Football Federation said today it will appeal Confederation of African Football disciplinary rulings after CAF fined Morocco $315,000 and imposed suspensions on players Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari over incidents linked to AFCON 2024 arguing the sanctions do not match the seriousness of what occurred.
In a statement, the federation said the match against Senegal was marked by the withdrawal of Senegal players and staff and a pitch invasion by Senegal supporters, followed by disorder and crowd violence, and said its leadership had formally raised concerns with CAF in an earlier letter before deciding to lodge an appeal.
“Given that the sanctions imposed by the Disciplinary Committee are disproportionate to the gravity of these events, as emphasized in the official correspondence sent by the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation to the President of the Confederation of African Football, and in its commitment to upholding all rights guaranteed by law, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has decided to appeal these rulings, said the federation.
CAF had also fined Senegal coach Pape Thiaw was suspended for five CAF matches and fined $100,000 for unsporting conduct, while Senegal players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr received two match suspensions for behaviour towards the referee.
Senegal’s federation was fined a total of $615,000 over supporter misconduct and team conduct that CAF said damaged the image of the game and breached principles of fair play and integrity.
