Moroccan runners Abdelhadi Labäli and Hayat Benhima won the men’s and women’s titles at the 36th Marrakech International Marathon on Sunday Jan. 25, organisers said.
Labäli clocked 2:07:34 over 42.195 km to take the men’s race, ahead of Ethiopia’s Mekonen Hayimoro Yele in 2:08:19, with Moroccan Youness Benar third in 2:08:42, according to La Quotidienne.
Benhima led a Moroccan sweep in the women’s race, finishing in 2:24:48. She was followed by Oumaima Saoud in 2:25:05 and Kaoutar Farkoussi in 2:26:18, Moroccan outlets reported.
The race is staged on a flat road circuit, and the organisers had advertised more than 9,000 entrants from around the world. The marathon and half marathon start in central Marrakech and finish on Avenue de la Menara.
The Marrakech marathon sits on the African winter road calendar and draws elite runners chasing qualifying times and prize money. Organisers reported no major disruptions during the event Sunday.
