Moroccan authorities issued a warning Thursday for a major sea disturbance expected to hit the country’s Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts starting Friday afternoon.

The National Meteorology Directorate said waves of up to 8 meters (26 feet) will strike the Atlantic coast between Tangier and Agadir, beginning Friday, Jan. 23. The situation is expected to peak on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Waves between 4 and 6 meters (13 to 20 feet) are forecast in the Strait of Gibraltar, while Mediterranean coastal areas from El Jebha to Saïdia may see waves ranging from 3 to 5 meters (10 to 16 feet).

A high tide is also expected along the Atlantic coast, with water levels reaching between 3 and 3.8 meters (10 to 12 feet), especially during early morning and late afternoon.

Strong winds from the west are expected to accompany the sea disturbance and could persist through Sunday, Jan. 25, affecting the Atlantic coast, the Strait of Gibraltar and Mediterranean shores.

Authorities urged residents and visitors to avoid maritime activities and to stay away from beaches and breakwaters during peak wave periods to reduce the risk of being swept away or injured.

They also advised the public to follow local weather updates and obey instructions from maritime and local authorities.

The alert was issued by Youabd Lhoussaine, Head of the Communication Office at Morocco’s Directorate General of Meteorology.
