Moroccan television channels appear to be making a major strategic shift for the upcoming Ramadan 2026 season, potentially removing traditional “sitcoms” from their schedules entirely following years of intense criticism.
With less than two months remaining before Ramadan, no sitcoms have begun filming, according to information reported by Hespress. This is unusual for this period and points to a deliberate decision by broadcasters. Even the second season of Khou Khwatatu, which had received initial approval from 2M, has not entered production.
Ramadan sitcoms have faced strong criticism for years. Viewers and critics have regularly complained about weak scripts, repetitive storylines, and humor seen as outdated or unfunny. Despite large budgets and well-known actors, many shows failed to meet audience expectations, leading to frequent calls for boycotts on social media.
To respond to this dissatisfaction, broadcasters are reportedly shifting toward short comedy series with 15 to 30 episodes. These formats are seen as offering better storytelling and more developed characters, instead of relying on quick jokes.
Media professionals note, however, that this change will only succeed if channels apply stricter project selection and give more opportunities to new writers with fresh ideas.
