Snowfall blanketed the eastern Moroccan city of Oujda on Tuesday evening in a rare weather event, marking the city’s first significant snowfall since 2012, according to historical climate records.
Snow began falling in the early evening hours, covering streets and public squares in a white layer and drawing residents outdoors to photograph and celebrate a scene largely absent from the city for more than a decade.
Oujda, the capital of Morocco’s Oriental region, rarely experiences snow due to its semi arid climate, making the event exceptional for many locals.
The snowfall came amid a cold wave affecting eastern Morocco, in line with forecasts issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology, which had warned of cold air masses causing a sharp drop in temperatures, along with rain and snow in several parts of the region.
