A deep low pressure system continued to affect Morocco on Monday, bringing widespread rain that was sometimes thundery, snowfall in higher elevations and a marked drop in temperatures, especially across mountain areas and the high plateaus, the General Directorate of Meteorology said.

Hussein Youabed, the agency’s head of communication told Hespress the disturbance would affect the Atlas ranges, the Rif, Saiss, the Mediterranean coast, Atlantic plains, Souss and parts of central, eastern and southern Morocco.

Snow is expected above 1200 meters, mainly in the High and Middle Atlas and the high plateaus, with light snow possible on Rif peaks, he said, urging caution on mountain roads.

The agency also forecast strong winds in several areas that could worsen wind chill.

Temperatures are expected to fall on Tuesday and Wednesday, with cold to very cold conditions over the mountains and high plateaus and minimum temperatures that could drop below zero in the Atlas, while coastal areas and the southern provinces are expected to be less cold, he said.

In a day by day outlook, the agency said Monday Jan. 5 would bring locally heavy rain and showers across the Atlas, the Rif, Saiss, the Mediterranean coast, Atlantic plains, Souss and the northwest of the southern provinces, with snow above 1200 meters.

Tuesday Jan. 6 is expected to see a further drop, continued snowfall on higher ground and rain or showers in parts of the eastern Mediterranean coast, the north of the eastern region, Saiss and the Atlantic corridor between Rabat and Agadir, with strong winds.

It said Wednesday Jan. 7 should remain very cold in the Atlas, with possible residual light snow, before a gradual improvement from Thursday and a slight rise in daytime temperatures.

Youabed urged residents to follow official bulletins and warnings, especially in mountain areas.
