Moroccan security authorities have arrested a former employee of Morocco’s consulate general in Dubai on suspicion of involvement in a major financial embezzlement case, informed sources told Hespress.

According to the same sources, the suspect is considered the central figure in a case involving the misappropriation of public funds at the Moroccan consulate in Dubai.

The arrest comes weeks after a court sentenced another defendant in the same case to three years in prison for embezzlement of public money and forgery of official documents linked to his duties.

During earlier judicial proceedings, the convicted defendant identified the newly arrested former official as the main architect of the scheme, stating that he had fled the country following the exposure of the case.

Moroccan authorities subsequently issued an international arrest warrant through Interpol to secure his detention and extradition.

Sources confirmed that the arrest was carried out in coordination with security services at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, where the suspect was detained immediately upon arrival.

He was then transferred to the headquarters of the regional judicial police in Rabat, where he underwent interrogation last Thursday, including a face-to-face confrontation with the previously convicted defendant.

The case dates back to May, when inspection reports commissioned by Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita revealed serious financial irregularities at the Dubai consulate.

The reports concluded that two employees had engaged in the systematic embezzlement of public funds and manipulation of digital records over several years.

The amount allegedly misappropriated is estimated at nearly 10 million dirhams, according to available information, though investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of responsibility and identify any additional parties involved.

The suspect has since been presented to the public prosecutor at the Rabat Court of Appeal, who referred the case to the investigating judge in charge of financial corruption crimes.

Authorities have ordered the suspect to be held in custody pending a detailed judicial investigation, with the first hearing scheduled for 7 January.
