Moroccan authorities are stepping up operations across the Tangier region as irregular migration attempts increase along the northern coast, security sources told Hespress.
Between 200 and 300 migrants are being intercepted and transferred daily from areas stretching between Tangier Assilah and Fnideq Mdiq, the sources added.
The uptick comes as would be migrants seek to exploit the Christmas holiday period, when staffing levels among Spain’s Guardia Civil are reduced, particularly along the border separating Fnideq from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
Most of those intercepted in nearby forests around Tangier, Ksar Sghir, Fnideq and Tetouan are from sub Saharan African countries, alongside Moroccan nationals, according to the same sources.
Those detained are transported by bus to eastern and southern regions of Morocco to prevent repeated attempts, in operations coordinated among security services tasked with curbing irregular migration.
The latest activity echoes October, when authorities foiled calls for mass crossings toward Ceuta. At the time, about 5,000 people were intercepted across the region, including roughly 3,000 Moroccan youths and minors and some 2,000 migrants from sub Saharan Africa, officials said.
