Moroccan authorities have opened a judicial investigation into a case involving the sexual abuse of a minor and an alleged illegal abortion carried out at a private clinic in Rabat, the daily newspaper Al Akhbar reported in its weekend edition.

According to the report, the case emerged after the family of a minor filed a complaint with the Royal Gendarmerie in Salé and the public prosecutor’s office.

The complaint led to the questioning of seven people, including a gynecologist practicing in Rabat, his secretary, a nurse, a woman described as an intermediary, the main suspect accused of luring the minor, and two of his acquaintances from the Essehoul area near Salé.

The suspects were brought before the public prosecutor at the Rabat Court of Appeal on Friday in custody, in the presence of the minor victim and her mother, the newspaper said.

The prosecutor conducted preliminary questioning before referring the case to an investigating judge.

The investigating judge ordered the main suspect, born in 2003, to be held in pretrial detention at Tamesna prison on charges related to the sexual assault of a minor, resulting in pregnancy and abortion.
The six other suspects were released pending further investigation, including the doctor whose clinic allegedly hosted the abortion procedure.

He was released on bail set at 10,000 dirhams, along with the nurse, the doctor’s secretary, the intermediary, and the two acquaintances of the main suspect.

The investigation, led by the Royal Gendarmerie in the Essehoul district under the supervision of the public prosecutor, is examining allegations of sexual exploitation of a minor, illegal abortion, and complicity.

The newspaper reported that the victim’s mother’s complaint triggered the case, including allegations that the crime was filmed by two of the suspects.

Further investigative hearings are scheduled for Jan. 21. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the inquiry could uncover additional cases involving similar alleged illegal abortion practices.
