Morocco braces for continued rain, snow, and cold weather this week

Morocco is set to experience continued unstable weather this week, with repeated storms affecting the northern and central regions, according to the country’s meteorological authorities.

Houssin Youabed, head of communications at the General Directorate of Meteorology, told Hespress that the current pattern is driven by active low-pressure systems over the Atlantic Ocean and the Iberian Peninsula, coupled with a high-pressure extension over southern Morocco. This combination is bringing cold air aloft, interacting with moist Atlantic air, leading to scattered rain and occasional thunderstorms, particularly over the northwest, Rif, Loukkos, Gharb, and the northern and central plains, as well as the Saïss and phosphate plateaus.

Snowfall is expected over the High and Middle Atlas and Rif mountains, especially on peaks above 1,500 meters, accompanied by very cold temperatures in highlands, elevated plateaus, and the southeast. Frost formation during the night and early morning is also likely. Southern regions are expected to remain relatively warmer and more stable, though occasional strong winds may occur along coasts and highlands.

Friday: Cold air in the upper atmosphere will maintain very cold conditions over the Atlas, Rif, and eastern plateaus, with the risk of frost at night and in the early morning. Rainfall is expected to intensify in northern plains north of El Jadida, spreading gradually toward Saïss, Rif, and phosphate plateaus. Snow may fall over the Middle Atlas, with strong winds along southern regions.

Saturday: Cold weather will continue across highlands, southeast, and eastern plateaus. Minimum temperatures will range from -1 to 7°C in the Atlas, 2 to 5°C in the Rif and eastern plateaus, and 10 to 13°C in the south and near the coasts. Light rain or snowflakes may occur on the Middle Atlas, Saïss, and Rif, while strong winds are expected along the Mediterranean coast and central-southern coasts.

Sunday: Another atmospheric disturbance is anticipated, bringing locally heavy rain, particularly over Tangier, Loukkos, Rif, and Gharb, and snowfall over the High and Middle Atlas and Rif above 1,500 meters. Northern and central plains, the Atlas mountains, Saïss, phosphate plateaus, the Mediterranean coast, and northern eastern areas will remain mostly cloudy with rain, while the south will see lighter, scattered precipitation.

Next Week: From Monday onward, variable weather is expected with persistent chances of rain and snow in northern regions. Cold to very cold conditions will continue in highlands and eastern plateaus, with localized frost at night. Moderate to strong winds will affect the east, Atlas, desert areas, and central plains, increasing the chill factor and requiring caution in mountainous and flood-prone areas.
