A three-story building under construction collapsed Wednesday afternoon in the Al-Mohammadi neighborhood of Beni Yakhlef, near the coastal city of Mohammedia, prompting a large emergency response but causing no injuries, authorities said.
Local officials confirmed that the collapse resulted in material damage only. Security services moved quickly to verify that no workers were inside the building at the time of the incident, amid reports that construction workers had left the site shortly before the collapse.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately known. The incident has raised questions about the quality of construction materials used, compliance with building regulations and safety standards, and the level of oversight exercised by relevant authorities.
Following the collapse, units from the Royal Gendarmerie, local authorities, auxiliary forces and civil protection services were deployed to the site. The area was cordoned off and secured as a precaution to prevent further risks.
Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse and to identify any potential violations or structural deficiencies, with a view to establishing legal responsibility.
