Moroccan nurses’ union condemns attack on rural health worker

A Moroccan nurses’ union has condemned what it described as an attempted sexual assault and physical attack on a nurse working at a rural health center in the province of Ouezzane, calling the incident a serious breach of safety and dignity for health workers.

In a statement sent to Hespress, the provincial branch of the Independent Union of Nurses and Health Technicians said the nurse was assaulted while traveling from her workplace at the Sidi Bousabr communal health center, in circumstances the union described as alarming and dangerous.

The union said the incident highlights the vulnerability of health professionals, particularly women, working in rural areas where transport options are limited and security conditions are weak. It argued that such attacks go beyond an individual case and amount to an assault on the integrity of the public health system itself.

The union expressed full solidarity with the nurse and urged local health authorities to fulfill their legal responsibility to protect staff, citing civil service regulations that require administrations to ensure employee safety.

It said it was prepared to take further action if necessary to defend nurses’ rights to work in safe and dignified conditions.
