Authorities in Morocco’s Azilal province have suspended classes at all educational institutions on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 16 and 17, as part of precautionary measures ahead of heavy snowfall and rain forecast for the region.
The provincial authorities said the decision also includes placing several mountainous roadways under close monitoring, with temporary closures to be implemented if necessary, alongside the full mobilization of logistical equipment and personnel to limit risks and ensure public safety.
Snow-clearing machinery has been deployed and distributed strategically to allow rapid intervention and prevent isolation of mountain villages, particularly in areas above 1,400 meters. Officials said efforts will focus on maintaining mobility for residents whenever weather conditions allow.
Authorities also announced the creation of monitoring patrols and the possible nighttime closure of several key mountain routes using snow barriers. Roads affected include the entrance to Azilal city toward Ait M’Hamed, Ait M’Hamed toward Tizi N’Tirghist, Amzrai toward Zaouiat Ahansal, Ait Bouguemez toward Kalaat M’Gouna and Tizi N’Tirghist, and Ait Tamlil via Ait Minifri.
On the health front, ambulances have been placed on high alert, medical teams reinforced at health centers and clinics in vulnerable areas, and essential medicines stocked, particularly those related to cold-related illnesses. Authorities said pregnant women will be monitored proactively and housed in maternity centers if required.
Social support measures were also adopted, including temporary shelter for homeless individuals at reception centers in Azilal, Demnate and Tanannt, in coordination with local authorities.
Local officials, health volunteers, members of the Moroccan Red Crescent and mountain guides have been mobilized, while awareness campaigns have urged residents to take precautions, avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from riverbeds and ravines during the warning period.
The measures were announced following a meeting of the provincial monitoring and vigilance committee held Monday, after authorities received weather alert bulletin No. 147/2025, which placed the region under an orange-level alert. Forecasts warn of snowfall ranging from 50 to 80 centimeters and rainfall totals of 45 to 65 millimeters.
