Supporters of Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, said Friday that authorities have arrested her during a memorial service for a lawyer recently found dead under suspicious circumstances.

A foundation bearing Mohammadi’s name reported that she was detained at the ceremony, though Iranian officials have not issued any immediate comment. It also remains unclear whether Mohammadi, 53, will be returned to prison to continue serving her remaining sentence.

Her supporters said she was subjected to a “violent arrest earlier today by security forces,” adding that several other activists were also taken into custody.

Mohammadi had been released temporarily in December 2024 on medical grounds. Her supporters have warned for months that she faced a high risk of being sent back to prison.
