The African Development Bank has approved a 270 million euro loan to support Morocco’s airport expansion and modernization program, aimed at strengthening the country’s air transport competitiveness ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
The funding will upgrade major hubs to meet rising passenger and cargo demand, the Bank said.
The program covers extensive works at the airports of Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier and Fez, including larger terminals, a new control tower in Marrakech, 1.5 million square meters of aircraft parking and 7.6 kilometers of new taxiways.
It also provides for next-generation security systems, automated baggage handling and improved mobility equipment to enhance the passenger experience.
Digitalization and operational efficiency form a core part of the plan, which is expected to boost safety and create thousands of jobs in the short term.
By 2030, expanded capacity should reach 14 million passengers in Marrakech, five million in Agadir, 3.6 million in Tangier and three million in Fez.
