Moroccan game developers say restrictions by Apple’s App Store and Google Play are blocking them from earning directly from their products, undercutting the country’s push to build a domestic video game industry.
Developers said the platforms do not allow merchant accounts to be created from Morocco, making in app purchases, paid downloads and subscriptions impossible. As a result, studios rely almost entirely on ad revenue, which they say is too small to sustain production.
Tech analyst Bilaj said global app stores have tightened rules after disputes with developers over fees and growing concerns about fraud. He added that Morocco’s relatively small market and past cases of digital scams have made international platforms more risk averse.
Cybersecurity expert Hassan Kharjouj said Apple and Google prioritize larger markets, leaving Moroccan developers with higher barriers to entry. He urged authorities to offer stronger guarantees and regulatory clarity to unlock payments and support growth.
