The administration of US President Donald Trump has suspended all immigration processing, including green card and citizenship applications, for nationals from 19 non European countries, citing national security and public safety concerns.
The move applies to countries already facing partial entry restrictions announced in June and adds new limits to immigration under a policy central to Trump agenda.
An internal memo cited a shooting last week in Washington that killed one National Guard member and seriously injured another, saying the suspect was Afghan.
Trump has also issued hostile remarks toward Somalis in recent days.
Since returning to office in January, Trump has expanded enforcement operations across major US cities and tightened controls along the Mexico border.
The fully restricted list includes Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Countries under partial restrictions include Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.
