A Moroccan court on Tuesday sentenced French-Moroccan rapper Walid Georgey, known as Maes, to seven years in prison after convicting him in a high-profile criminal case that stirred debate in artistic and legal circles.
The Criminal Chamber of the Tangier Court of Appeal found Maes guilty of charges including forming a criminal gang, attempted kidnapping and unlawful confinement, and incitement to commit felonies and misdemeanors. The case centers on allegations that he was linked to a network that planned to target a man with whom he had a financial dispute and kill him.
Prosecutors said Maes encouraged members of the network to carry out the attack, including an individual described as a “contract killer.”
The plan allegedly involved executing the killing in Marrakech, but authorities disrupted it at the last moment after a failed assault exposed the plot.
The conviction marks a significant turn in the career of Maes, who rose to prominence in the Francophone rap scene in recent years before becoming entangled in one of Morocco’s most serious criminal cases involving organized crime.
Maes has denied all allegations, insisting he had no connection to the individuals implicated in the plot. The court, however, cited the gravity of the facts and what it described as strong indicators of his role in incitement and coordination.
The ruling concludes the first judicial phase of the case. It remains unclear whether the rapper’s legal team will appeal the verdict before higher courts.
