Morocco has formally adopted the Córdoba Declaration on the future of the global olive sector during World Olive Tree Day in Spain, the Agriculture Ministry said.

Signed November 20 by agriculture ministers and international organisations, the document sets a shared roadmap for sustainable, resilient and modern olive production worldwide.

Representing Morocco, Agriculture Minister Ahmed El Bouari highlighted the sector’s centrality in the national economy, noting that olive trees account for 65 percent of the country’s orchard area, more than 1.2 million hectares,  and generate over 51 million workdays annually.

The industry covers nearly 19 percent of Morocco’s edible-oil needs and contributes around 2.1 billion dirhams to the trade balance.

The ministry said the declaration reinforces efforts launched under the Green Morocco Plan and expanded through the Generation Green 2020–2030 strategy, focusing on quality, human capital and climate adaptation.

During the International Olive Council’s 122nd session, held on 19 November in Córdoba, Morocco was selected to chair the IOC in 2026. The country is one of the organisation’s 11 founding members, alongside states representing 94 percent of global olive production.
