Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf claimed that Algeria is ready to support mediation between Morocco and the Polisario Front in the Sahara dispute.
“Algeria, as a neighboring country to both sides, will not hesitate to back any mediation effort under the UN framework, as long as it respects the principles of a fair, lasting, and final solution,” Attaf said on Tuesday during a press conference.
Attaf claimed that Algeria’s involvement reflects its concern for the security and stability of its neighbors.
“Our security and stability are closely linked to those of our neighbors and the wider region,” he said.
He argued that Algeria has never looked at its security in isolation. “Our approach is inclusive, considering all our neighbors, especially in the Saharan Sahel region,” he concluded.
Attaf emphasized that any solution should follow “all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including the latest one.”
On the latest UN decision, the Algerian foreign minister downplayed its impact, saying the Sahara dispute “has not been closed.”
Attaf added that the idea of a “closed file is nothing new, and the issue remains on the UN’s agenda, including in the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the decolonization committee.”
“The Security Council has not adopted Morocco’s positions, nor recognized its claimed sovereignty over the Sahara,” he argued, adding that “it has left the negotiations and their outcomes to Morocco and the Polisario Front.”
