Former Tunisian Foreign Minister Ahmed Ounaies said Algeria has come to realize that its position on the Moroccan Sahara “has no future,” following the latest UN Security Council resolution endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan.
Speaking to Tunisia’s Jawhara FM radio, Ounaies said Algeria has abandoned its decades-old “propaganda aimed at creating new mini-states in a region that never had historical legitimacy.”
He added that “Algeria will eventually take part in Morocco’s dialogue initiative,” asserting that “the era of confusion and domination by the Algerian military is over.”
His comments came after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution reaffirming support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the “just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution” consistent with the UN Charter.
The resolution also urged all parties, including Algeria and the Polisario, to cooperate fully with the UN, maintain the cease-fire, and refrain from actions that could jeopardize the political process or regional stability.
Earlier, U.S. presidential adviser on Arab and African affairs Massad Boulos said dialogue between Morocco and Algeria remains “open and steady,” focused on building a long-term peace process after more than five decades of tension.
He added that Washington has been working closely with both countries in recent weeks, noting that Morocco has shown flexibility and a “genuine willingness” to consider proposals from other parties in pursuit of a resolution.
