A Moroccan court has sentenced a man to five years in prison and fined him $107,300 for human trafficking, in the country’s first conviction linked to recruiting citizens for forced labor in scam centers in Asia, according to the Associated Press.

The court found Nabil Moafik guilty of luring young Moroccans with fake online job offers in Thailand, who were later trafficked to Myanmar and forced to work under abusive conditions in online fraud operations. Victims testified that they were tortured and made to pay ransoms in cryptocurrency to regain their freedom.

Moafik denied the charges, saying he only acted as a job broker and was unaware of the exploitation. Prosecutors said he ran a Facebook group targeting Moroccan migrants in Turkey and profited from each recruitment.

The U.N. estimates 120,000 people are trapped in similar scam compounds across Asia.
