The adoption by the United Nations Security Council of resolution 2797, which considers the autonomy plan as the basis for resolving the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, marks “a big step forward,” said the new US ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan.
“This is a great day. It’s a big step forward,” the US ambassador told MAP, following the adoption of the Security Council resolution on Friday.
Mr. Buchan attended the Security Council vote on Resolution 2797 in New York, alongside the US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz.
Following this vote, ambassador Waltz expressed the satisfaction of the United States, penholder of the resolution, with this “historic” adoption, reaffirming that the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative is “the only basis” for achieving a just and lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
