Following tensions over draft law 59.24 on higher education and scientific research, Minister Azeddine Midaoui is seeking to resume dialogue with the National Union for Higher Education, Hespress reported.
The union’s national office, however, insists on “serious negotiations” rather than formal meetings, particularly on the content of the bill currently before parliament.
According to informed sources, Midaoui recently expressed his willingness to meet with union secretary-general though no official invitation has yet been issued.
The union maintains that, since the bill has already been referred to the House of Representatives, discussion should now take place with the government rather than the ministry.
Parliamentary committees are prioritizing budget debates under the 2026 finance bill, delaying the education law’s examination. The union has opted to engage political groups directly to propose amendments that reflect its concerns, especially regarding university autonomy and the preservation of free public education.
