A Turkish court ordered a man to pay his ex-wife 10,000 liras every three months (about $238) for the next ten years to cover expenses for their shared cats following their divorce.
According to Turkish media, court documents show that the couple’s two cats will remain with the ex-wife, while the ex-husband provides ongoing financial support.
The quarterly payments will be adjusted annually for inflation, potentially totaling nearly $10,000 over the decade.
Under Turkish law, pets are considered “moveable property.” However, recent legislation allows courts to approve agreements between divorcing couples regarding the care and custody of animals.
While Turkish courts have previously ruled on pet custody, this case marks the first to establish long-term financial support for pets after divorce.
