Morocco’s date production reached a record 160,000 tons in the 2025–2026 agricultural season, up 55 percent from the previous year, the highest level ever recorded in the country, the Ministry of Agriculture said during the 14th International Date Fair in Erfoud.
The increase is attributed to favorable weather conditions across oasis regions, especially in Drâa-Tafilalet, which accounts for 76 percent of national output, followed by Souss-Massa and the Oriental region at 11 percent each.
Moderate winter temperatures, long warm periods, and rainfall during March and April improved pollination, fruit quality, and yields.
The ministry said Morocco is nearing self-sufficiency in date supply, with production increasingly covering domestic demand and allowing for future export growth. The sector generates about 2 billion dirhams annually and provides 3.6 million workdays, sustaining livelihoods for over 2 million people in oasis areas.
Under the Green Generation 2020–2030 strategy, palm cultivation expanded from 50,900 hectares in 2008 to more than 69,400 in 2025, boosting output by 77 percent.
The government pledged to keep supporting the sector as part of national food security and climate adaptation goals.
