Promising forecasts of rainfall across Morocco next week have sparked renewed optimism among farmers, who are already preparing for the new agricultural season after several years of drought. In provinces such as Larache, known for their agricultural vitality, activity has intensified as farmers begin early planting of alfalfa, barley, and sugar beet.

Local farmer Abdelssalam Cherki told Hespress that many growers are rushing to plow and sow before the first rains, hoping for sufficient precipitation to reduce irrigation costs. “There is real optimism this year,” he said, “farmers want to believe this season will finally bring relief.”

Agricultural expert Riad Ouhtita explained that Morocco’s current weather instability typically begins in the mid-south and moves north, with early rains usually arriving before the end of October.

He called on the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Office for Agricultural Advisory to assist farmers in selecting suitable crops and adopting direct seeding techniques to preserve soil moisture.

After seven consecutive years of drought, Ouhtita said, Morocco now has a clearer picture of which crops best suit each region’s conditions, urging a sustainable approach to ensure the long-term success of the coming season.
