Thirty-five people were killed and 3,444 others injured, including 134 seriously, in 2,492 traffic accidentsthat occurred in Morocco’s urban areas between October 13 and 19, according to a statement by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
The DGSN identified the main causes of the accidents, in order of frequency, as driver inattention, failure to yield the right of way, speeding, insufficient safety distance, pedestrian inattention, loss of control, failure to stop at “Stop” signs, turning without signaling, illegal turns, driving in the wrong direction, running red lights, driving under the influence, driving on the left side of the road, and improper overtaking.
As part of road monitoring and enforcement efforts, police recorded 45,530 traffic violations nationwide during the same period. Authorities prepared 7,036 official reports submitted to prosecutors, while 38,494 on-the-spot fines were collected.
The total amount of fines reached 8.48 million dirhams (about $826,000). In addition, police impounded 4,147 vehicles, seized 7,036 documents, and temporarily suspended 301 vehicles.
The DGSN reiterated its call for drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and respect traffic regulations to reduce road casualties in Moroccan cities.
