The National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) has responded to recent viral videos on social media claiming that certain food additives in spreadable and processed cheeses are unsafe. ONSSA confirmed that the use of these additives is fully authorized and poses no risk to consumer health.
In a clarification provided to Hespress, ONSSA stated that the additives mentioned in the videos—specifically carrageenan (E407), tricalcium phosphate (E341), and polyphosphates (E452)—are legally permitted in Morocco for cheese manufacturing, including processed and spreadable cheeses.
ONSSA further noted that the use of these additives in cheese is also authorized by the “Codex Alimentarius” (Food Code) and complies with the laws in place in the European Union, Canada, the United States, Australia, and many other countries. The office emphasized that all cheese-producing facilities licensed by ONSSA are subject to regular inspections according to applicable laws, and that cheese containing these authorized additives does not pose a risk to public health.
