The United States is working on a peace agreement between Morocco and Algeria that could be finalized within 60 days, U.S. special envoy for peace missions Steve Witkoff said.
Speaking on CBS News’ 60 Minutes, Witkoff said his team was “working on Algeria and Morocco right now” and predicted “a peace deal there within sixty days.”
His comments sparked speculation about renewed American mediation in one of the Maghreb’s most entrenched disputes.
Ties between Rabat and Algiers have been severed since August 2021, when Algeria broke relations, accusing Morocco of “provocations.”
King Mohammed VI has repeatedly urged a “fraternal and sincere dialogue,” most recently in his July 30 speech, emphasizing the need to “reconcile hearts before institutions.”
Washington has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only realistic framework for resolving the dispute.
If successful, the proposed deal would mark the first diplomatic thaw in nearly 25 years.
