Record harvest expected for Morocco’s local legal cannabis in 2025

Morocco’s 2025 legal cannabis season is set to deliver a record harvest of the local “baldiya” variety, primarily used for pharmaceutical purposes due to its higher THC concentration compared with imported seeds.

According to a senior source at the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis Activities, total cultivated area reached 4,725 hectares this year, including 4,100 hectares of the local strain versus just 625 hectares of imported varieties. Around 80 percent of the “baldiya” crop has already been harvested, confirming its strong adaptation to local climate conditions and growing popularity among licensed farmers.

In contrast, imported seeds performed poorly, with only 45 percent of the licensed land actually cultivated. Officials attributed this to harsh weather and limited water availability, as these seeds are usually planted between July and August, when temperatures are highest. Some farmers also reported delays in receiving seeds, further affecting yields.

The agency described this season as a turning point in Morocco’s cannabis regulation, emphasizing the industrial and medical potential of local varieties and the need to adapt imported strains to national climatic realities.

The cultivated area for “baldiya” tripled compared with last year’s 1,400 hectares, spanning Taounate, Chefchaouen, and Al Hoceima, where 4,490 farmers are now organized under 250 licensed cooperatives.
