Morocco’s under-20 goalkeeper Yannis Benchaouch suffered a knee injury during the team’s historic semifinal victory over France at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, casting uncertainty over his participation in Sunday’s final.
Benchaouch, who had delivered several crucial saves before being substituted in the second half, admitted after the match that he was in pain but overwhelmed with pride. “I can’t bend my leg right now , exams will be done later, but the most important thing is the victory,” he told reporters, moments after Morocco sealed its first-ever qualification for a World Cup final at this level.
His teammates praised his decisive performance. “Without Yannis, we wouldn’t have made it this far,” said defender Ibrahim Gomis, adding that the team’s spirit carried them through the tense penalty shootout.
The 20-year-old’s injury overshadowed what was otherwise a euphoric night for the Atlas Cubs, who now stand on the brink of a historic world title. Team officials said medical tests would determine whether Benchaouch could feature in the final.
